Celebrate Independence Day with Care

It is a remarkable moment in American history to celebrate our nation's 250th year. It is also important this year that we honor Independence Day with care. Stage 2 fire restrictions are in place to reduce the risk of an accidental fire; however, it is up to each resident and visitor to be aware of any activity that might become the source of a fire. The Cottonwood fire at approximately 94,000 acres is the largest fire in Utah and in the nation, exhibiting extreme fire behavior. The Aspen Acres fire in Pueblo, Colorado, is only 4 days old and has consumed over 66,000 acres, much of it very similar to our local environment. At least 180 structures have been lost, and over 4,000 people have been evacuated. Extreme fire behavior is being observed.

To be better prepared in the case of an emergency, please be sure to pick up your evacuation placard if you have not already done so. Placards will be available during the pancake breakfast at the Dammeron Valley park on July 4th; DVFR will have a table with Firewise and Ready, Set, Go! information for residents. Placards can also be picked up any time at DVFR Station 13. Reminder: If you have large animals have a plan for evacuating them and maintaining them at a remote location until the emergency is over. Washington County and DVFR will work to provide current information regarding active evacuation notices. It is up to the owner to evacuate their animals in the event of an emergency. Turning livestock loose within the community is not a solution, as it puts others at risk of roadway blockages as they attempt to evacuate and could hinder emergency personnel.
